Gundeldingen

Basel's diverse, foodie 'Gundeli', an up-and-coming district just behind the main station

About Gundeldingen

Gundeldingen, universally called 'Gundeli', is the multicultural heartbeat of inner Basel, occupying the broad plateau directly behind the SBB main station. Its industrial past is still visible in landmarks like the Gundeldinger Feld, a former Sulzer-Burckhardt machine factory now reborn as a courtyard of cultural venues, climbing halls, cafes and the cult deli-restaurant Tellplatz 3. The spine of the district is Gundeldingerstrasse, a long high street packed with independent shops and an international roll-call of kitchens, from Sri Lankan curry houses to Turkish bakeries and Swiss bistros. This is a neighbourhood with a genuine sense of community and an unpretentious, lived-in energy that contrasts with the polished old town across the river. Expats and young families are drawn by its relative affordability, its welcoming multicultural character and its unbeatable transport links, with the station and the nearby Markthalle food hall on the doorstep. Green escapes lie just uphill on the Bruderholz, with Margarethenpark and allotment gardens for weekends. For investors, Gundeli represents Basel's value-and-growth story: more income, more upside and more buzz than the trophy old town, in a city renowned for stability.
