Maafushi is the poster child of the Maldives' local island tourism revolution. Before 2009, non-resort tourism was essentially illegal in the Maldives. The designated 'bikini beach' on the eastern shore allows tourists to swim freely, while the rest of the island maintains local dress codes. For property investors, Maafushi represents the Maldives' highest-yield guesthouse market. Operational guesthouses generate gross yields of 12-15%, driven by year-round occupancy from budget-conscious European, Asian, and domestic travellers. The island's proven tourism model, established brand recognition, and proximity to Malé make it a lower-risk entry point than emerging island destinations.
